Summer Reading

Summer Reading

Dear NBPHS Students and Families!
Being a strong reader has been proven again and again in research to improve ACT scores, grades, and success in “College and Beyond.” Just as an athlete wouldn’t sit on the couch for the summer months and expect to come back in the Fall in shape to perform, students shouldn’t expect to not read for the entire summer and come back in the Fall ready for classes. The English Department at NBPHS has worked collaboratively to choose interesting books for you to read over the summer that will tie-in to your coursework when you return next year.

  • Rising 9th graders will read "The Poet X" by Elizabeth Acevedo
  • Rising 10th graders will read "Little Fires Everywhere" by Celeste Ng
  • Rising 11th Graders will read "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers
  • Rising 12th graders will read "Their Eyes were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston

These are your books to keep. Each student will sign out that they received the book, and will put their name in the book to mark that it is theirs. This is a gift from our school to you, and we hope it helps you to prepare for your future.
