About Our School

Core Principles

Nashville Big Picture High School is a dynamic learning environment based on three core principles:

  1. We believe that learning must be based on the interest background and learning style of each student.

  2. We believe that a student's curriculum must be relevant to people and places that exist in the real world and that these relationships are essential to success.

  3. We believe a student's mastery must be authentically measured by the quality of her or his work.

Our Framework

The Big Picture Learning experience builds upon Core Content and incorporates these foundational principles into a framework that helps our students discover how to learn. This framework is rooted in five Learning Goals:

  1. Empirical Reasoning: How do I prove it?

  2. Quantitative Reasoning: How do I measure, compare or represent it?

  3. Communication: How do I take in and express ideas?

  4. Social Reasoning: What are other people's perspectives on this?

  5. Personal Qualities: What do I bring to this process?

Students' learning experiences are enhanced as they explore and secure internships and other real-world experiences in the Nashville community. In addition, many students exceed the school's course offerings by participating in dual enrollment with Nashville State Community College and Tennessee College of Applied Technology.
